Using industry frustrations to power the future of work

Introducing our founder, Kathryn Marie

The Birth of a Concept

Founder of Broad Careers, Kathryn Marie, was a tech professional with over 20 years of experience. She has faced the challenges of the lack of diversity and inclusion in workplaces first hand. Throughout her career, she applied to be appointed to technical roles that were then often given to male counterparts. When she pointed out the unfairness faced by her skilled female colleagues, she faced criticism and backlash. At many tech networking events, often as the only woman, she would ask, "Why aren't you hiring women?" The response was always the same: "They don't apply." Kathryn realised that repeating the same actions and expecting different results is futile. This led her to a crucial question: what if the issue isn't with the applicants but with the hiring practises themselves?

The Evolution of Broad Careers

Amidst the demands of full-time work, parenting, and daily responsibilities, Kathryn nurtured her ideas in spare moments. When she was made redundant herself, it was a turning point. Increasingly disenchanted with her career path in consulting, she decided to pursue her passion and principles. Broad Careers was calling for her full attention. Companies repeatedly talked about diverse hiring and opportunities but didn't change their hiring practices. Kathryn knew it was time to change that and offer people another option for finding great people and satisfying careers.

Unlocking Potential

Kathryn started Broad Careers, a transformative skill-matching service. Unlike traditional job boards, Broad Careers looks beyond qualifications. It addresses a core issue: individuals often self-select out of job opportunities due to perceived skill gaps. This can be because they have been raising a family or those facing a redundancy because of a changing job market. Broad Careers breaks this cycle by focusing on the value of real-world skills and how people operate in their daily lives. This innovative approach helps individuals discover hidden strengths and explore a wider range of career possibilities, whether they're looking for their first job, a career change, or new options.

A Level Playing Field

Kathryn’s journey took a transformative turn with her son’s Autism diagnosis, leading her to a profound awareness of the diverse hurdles faced by job seekers. Broad Careers is now dedicated to empowering every individual in their employment journey, transcending barriers of background or experience. By championing objective skills and talents, our service actively breaks down unconscious biases, ensuring equity for job candidates and employers alike. We’re proud to collaborate with non-profits to facilitate meaningful employment opportunities for those with unique needs and challenges.

A Passion Project with Purpose

Today, Broad Careers is more than a business for Kathryn; it's her life's work. It's about empowering individuals and breaking down the hiring barriers that perpetuate inequality. This innovative system has the potential to revolutionise companies and society by fostering a more inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive based on their true potential. Diversity in the workplace is a catalyst for societal equality, as it cultivates an environment where every individual’s unique perspective and skills are valued. If fostering equality is at the heart of your mission, and you’re seeking to enrich your company with greater diversity and inclusivity, or you’re considering including new and innovative hiring practices, the opportunity for transformation is here and the time is now to act.
